Welcome to Grand Rapids!

28' statue of Leonardo da Vinci's horse in Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park From this program we hope you can tell that good things are well under way for the annual APH conference, this year taking place in Grand Rapids, Michigan. "Grand Rapids? Where the...", you ask? If you look at your right palm, you'll have a picture of Michigan. From the upper knuckle of your thumb, go across to about a half-inch from the left side of your palm and that's where you'll find Grand Rapids, in the region we refer to as Michigan's West Coast. You get here by flying into the Gerald R. Ford International Airport where you'll take a shuttle just fifteen minutes to your hotel.

Michigan is a land of four seasons, and each of them is beautiful in its own right. For the dates of our conference, Grand Rapids averages daytime high temperatures in the fifties and nighttime lows in the thirties. For those who picture Michigan as the gateway to the Arctic, we can assure you it's extremely rare that to have snow in early November. Should this be one of those years, our first snows are gloriously beautiful and smell as magnificent as lilacs in the spring—and then they quickly melt. More typically we're having an Indian summer and enjoying the last of our autumn colors.

Oval Office at Gerald R. Ford Museum Those who don't get excited about the seasons won't mind their foray in Michigan because we'll be staying in the fabulous confines of one opulent hotel with 700 richly appointed guest rooms. The Amway Grand Plaza hotel is situated in the heart of the city on the banks of the Grand River, housing six restaurants and several wonderful shops, so you won't have to leave the building for anything except our Saturday evening party.

For anybody wanting to get out a bit, the Amway is within easy walking distance of more than 50 wonderfully diverse restaurants and nightspots, some connected to the hotel by an enclosed skywalk. Just across the river is America's most entertaining presidential museum, the Gerald R. Ford Museum, where you can attend a White House State Dinner, step inside the Oval Office, and see the original Watergate burglar tools.

Grand Rapids Public Museum Also across the river is the Grand Rapids Public Museum, location of our Saturday night soiree. Among its many exhibits is an explanation of Grand Rapids' early history as the furniture capital of the world. The industry developed here in the 19th century, making use of Michigan's rich forests and expansive waterways. Skilled artisans immigrated to Grand Rapids to build what, at the time, was some of the highest quality furniture in the world. West Michigan is now home to three of the largest office furniture manufacturers in the country: Steelcase, Herman Miller, and Haworth.

The real beauty of this conference, however, will to be the opportunity to network with fellow APHers in the beautiful spaces of the Amway Grand Plaza hotel while Furnishing Your Business with the Tools for Success from a strong lineup of useful workshops, speakers and special events. Plan to use the opportunities at this conference to build your business to the level you want it to be.

From everybody on the conference committee, we look forward to seeing you in November.
